MPs of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) will vote for the lifting of PSD Senator Dan Sova’s parliamentary immunity, PSD Chairman Liviu Dragnea stated on Monday.
”With regret, PSD will vote for lifting the immunity,” Liviu Dragnea stated, when asked by journalists about his party’s voting intentions on the matter. Liviu Dragnea was present on Monday at the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ), for a new term in the case relating to the 2012 referendum.
Dan Sova depends again on the members of the Parliament DNA issued a new request for approval of retaining and preventive arrest of the PSD Senator
The DNA request for approval of Senator Dan Sova’s retaining and preventive arrest arrived to the Senate. The young politician is accused of having received a bribe of EUR 100,000 in order to sign the closing of a contract between CET Govora and a lawyer’s office.
The request arrived to Senate President Calin Popescu Tariceanu’s office and will be sent to the Permanent Bureau of the Senate, while in the Monday meeting, politicians will decide whether the request would be forwarded to the Juridical Committee of the Senate, that will issue a report after Dan Sova’s hearing, Mediafax reported.
DNA prosecutors notified the Prosecutors Office of the High Court to demand the President of the Senate the approval of the retaining and preventive arrest of Senator Dan Sova.
According to prosecutors, during October 2011 – July 2014, Sova asked for sums of money and received a total value of EUR 100,000 from a denounce maker in return for peddling the genuine influence he had had over the General Manager of thermal energy supplier (CET) Govora SA, Mihai Balan, so that the company would sign a juridical counselling contract with a lawyer’s office. The contract was formulated as a monthly subscription at EUR 10,000 per month.
Mihai Balan was already retained by DNA prosecutors and will be presented on Friday to the High Court with a proposition of preventive arrest.
CET Govora Manager Mihai Balan has been on probation in the file that includes charges of abuse of office against him as he had signed two contracts of legal assistance with a company at Dan Sova’s “order and interest”, DNA prosecutors point out. They have also shown that CET Govora had six jurists and the contracted services were not required throughout the time of the contract.
PNL Co-chair Alina Gorghiu declared that Liberals would approve the request of Justice concerning Dan Sova’s retaining and arrest, pointing out that PSD would do a “civilised gesture” if it demanded the Senator to resign his position within the Senate.
On the other hand, Social – Democrat Vice-President Ecaterina Andronescu mentioned that the vote would be positive only if prosecutors’ proof was solid.
This will be the third voting on Senator Dan Sova’s possible arrest in the Parliament. In June, the Parliament majority has created a shield around Senator Sova, known as Victor Ponta’s close friend. Senators failed to cease Sova’s immunity during both voting sessions. On the contrary, they even used tricks to move this case to the Constitutional Court.
The Senate Standing Bureau is scheduled to discuss on Monday the request for remand and pre-trial detention of PSD Senator Dan Sova and to forward it to the Judicial Committee to draft a report.
Moreover, Sova will be called by the Judicial Committee to study his file in order to express his position.
