Eight mayors from Gorj and Dolj Counties, detained for corruption

Public administration in Gorj and Dolj counties has been rocked by a wave of arrests: Gorj Court prosecutors have detained eight mayors, the former public administrator of the Rovinari City Hall and a company manager.

According to the spokesperson of the Gorj County Police Inspectorate, Mayor Mihai Calota (Urdari commune) was detained in a tax evasion, money laundering, corruption and the breaking of corporate law case. Raids were conducted on Tuesday morning, resulting in the arrest of Mayors Adrian Mangu (Barbatesci commune), Ilie Petroi (Aninoasa commune), Sorin Bucurescu (Slivilest commune), Petre Grigorie (Plopsoru commune), Florinel Tuila (Catunele commune), Ion Gruescu (Negomir) and Ana Ceana (Melinesti commune).

“Investigations have shown that from January to December this year, the mayors concerned used their positions to ask for and receive various sums of money in exchange for awarding and paying public contracts. The bribes total approximately RON 400,000,” the communiqué reads.
