US Ambassador Klemm: Ford needs speedway to Pitesti to soar production

U.S. Ambassador Hans Klemm celebrated on Thursday, alongside Ford Romania, the production of 1,000,000 EcoBoost 1-liter engines manufactured by the Ford motor engine plants in Craiova and Cologne since production started in 2012. He praised Ford, saying it “proves what American creativity and technology can bring to Romania and what can be accomplished by collaborating with the well-trained Romanian workforce,” and emphasized the importance of a better infrastructure for the future significant growth of Ford production in Romania.
Klemm said in southwestern city of Craiova, on visiting the Ford plant that the American car maker needs a speedway from its plant gates to Pitesti in order to increase its production beyond its current levels.

According to the US ambassador, Ford also would require a better railway infrastructure so as to bring the spares it needs and then to export its products.

“A very specific need is a better infrastructure – better roads, better railway connections and this is necessary not only to the Ford company but also to all the other big manufacturers, including the other car maker, Dacia which in its turn has asked for a better road infrastructure. I believe this is something a lot of Romanians also demand. Ford is planning a major investment in Romania, which would soar its production beyond its current levels, yet in order to do that it really, badly needs a speedway network from this plant to Pitesti, and then to Europe, one to be better than the current level. Likewise, they also need a better railway infrastructure to bring the spares they need and afterwards to exports their products”, said ambassador Klemm, answering the question of the journalists about the specific needs of the Ford plant in Craiova.

He added that an increase of the productivity is hard to forecast should these improvements are not considered.

‘As for the possible American investments in Romania in the near future, the US diplomat said that our country offers a huge potential for all kinds of investors, yet positive investment conditions, such as stability, transparency and predictability of the investment milieu should be guaranteed’, concluded Hans Klemm.

Ford investment in Romania is emblematic of the strength of the economic and trade relationship between the US and Romania

This is the first visit of the American Ambassador to the Ford plant since his arrival at post in September this year. He said that the Ford investment in Romania is emblematic of the strength of the economic and trade relationship between the US and Romania. Hans Klemm said that one of his goals as ambassador is “increasing prosperity for the Romanian and American peoples, by augmenting the flow of goods, services and investments between our countries.”

“President Iohannis, Prime Minister Ciolos and other members of the Romanian Government have asked me to focus my efforts and energy in this [economic] area, promote American investments in Romania, to increase trade between the two countries and I believe that Ford, through the investment in the Craiova plant, is a very positive example about what can be achieved in the cooperation between the two countries. Ford is a factory that can be taken as a model in Romania, and reaching one million engines is an example of what can be done in Craiova”, said the US ambassador.

Hans Klemm commended the Ford plant in Craiova at the festive moment that marked the production of no. one million 1-litre EcoBoost engine. “I wish further success to the Ford company in Craiova and in Romania, as an example of what American technology, American creativity can bring to Romania, and also of what working together with a very well -skilled Romanian workforce can bring to our countries. (…) I am looking forward to paying other visits to see how you make your vision come true in terms of increasing production at this very important plant”, added the US ambassador at the Ford plant in Craiova.
