Liberals hit by integrity criteria

Approximately 100 of the 1,100 mayors of the National Liberal Party (PNL) will not be able to run in the next elections under their party’s aegis because they fail to meet the integrity criteria recently adopted by PNL. PNL Vice President Teodor Atanasiu has confirmed the situation.

“We have plenty of losses. 100 mayors, losses out of 1,100. PNL is making an effort no other party has made, despite the fact that most of the voters do not look at this aspect. We incur losses from the get-go in order to reform the political class,” Teodor Atanasiu stated on Wednesday evening on Realitatea TV.

PNL’s National Council will meet on Friday, December 11, in order to adopt the integrity criteria. PNL members that will run in the local elections will have to meet other criteria too, other
than the legal criteria included in the statute. Among them are the criteria that concern conflict of interest and incompatibilities.

‘Adevarul’ daily presented a list of important PNL members that do not meet the integrity criteria and will be unable to run in next year’s elections on behalf of their party. Aristotel Cancescu, suspended Chairman of the Brasov County Council, arraigned for corruption. Point 7 of the Liberals’ Ten Commandments refers to “discriminatory attitudes” and the National Antidiscrimination Council fined Timisoara Mayor Nicolae Robu for a Facebook posting about “modernizing Gypsies.”

Marius Zmau, co-chairman of PNL Suceava, is involved in a criminal case in which he is accused of tax evasion that cost the state RON 2.27 M.

Four Prahova County MPs – Andrei Volosevici, Dragos Gunia, Nicolae Alexandru and Virgil Guran – are suspected of party switching, one of the actions banned by the Liberals’ Integrity Code.

Zalau Mayor (and PNL Salaj co-chairman) Radu Capilnasu was declared incompatible in 2013.

Hunedoara Mayor Viorel Arion and Deva Mayor Petru Marginean were accused of conflict of interest. They allegedly benefitted from public contracts awarded to companies whose shareholders members of their families are, ‘Adevarul’ writes.
