8.8 million Romanians connected to the Internet

Internet penetration has grown exponentially in Romania in recent years, with 8.8 million users being currently registered at national level, 6.5 million of them using the internet on a daily basis, a Romanian Transmedia Audit Bureau (BRAT) report shows, being quoted by Agerpres.

According to the report, 70 per cent of the urban population and 44 per cent of the rural population uses the internet. In urban areas, the daily use of the internet has grown more than sevenfold since 2002, from 8 to 56 per cent, in the case of the 14-64 age group. At the same time, 56 per cent of people living in rural area households have access to the internet.

In urban areas, 95 per cent of the 14-24 age group use the internet, the percentage surpassing 98 per cent in Bucharest and other large cities. In rural areas that percentage stands at 82 per cent, but given the significant growth rate, the percentages will most likely be the same in several years’ time.
