National Defence Minister Mihnea Motoc received on Friday the US Ambassador in Bucharest, Hans Klemm, with whom he discussed issues related to the bilateral defence cooperation, within the framework of the Joint Declaration on the Strategic Partnership for the 21st Century between the two countries.
According to a press release the Romanian Defence Ministry sent to Agerpres, the meeting also tackled issues concerning cooperation in the theatres of operations in Afghanistan, and also some elements related the preparing the agenda of the future NATO Summit in Warsaw, in July 2016, and the Alliance’s strategic adaptation dimension.
The meeting between the two officials was held in the context of announcing on Friday the technical capability of the Aegis Ashore anti-missile system at the military base in Deveselu.
Minister Motoc appreciated the open and pragmatic manner of the Romanian-US dialogue for implementing the bilateral agreement in this field, pointing out that Romania has honored in time and fully the commitments assumed under this project. Also highlighted was the complex nature of the current security environment, with focus on the developments in the extended Black Sea region.
The Romanian defence minister underscored the essential role of the US for strengthening Romania’s security and of the eastern flank of the Alliance, by implementing specific concrete initiatives – European Reassurance Initiative and European Activity Set, and also through intensifying the joint programme of drills held on the national territory.
In the perspective of the NATO Summit in July 2016, the officials highlighted the common interest in the long-term adapting of the Alliance, with adequate attention paid to the Black Sea region and the position of effective deterrence and defence, based on a robust Allied presence on the eastern flank of NATO, the Defence Ministry informs.
