Hans Klemm: US plans to fully back Iohannis, Ciolos and his Government

The US plans to fully back President Iohannis, Prime Minister Ciolos and his Government, US Ambassador Hans Klemm stated in an interview for Digi24, expressing his hope that the Romanian institutions will offer the people that the street asked for.

At the start of the interview, Klemm stated, referring to the Colectiv nightclub fire, that the Romanians’ reaction to this tragedy was “extremely inspiring.” “Tens of thousands of people took to the streets, very peacefully, in the spirit of civic involvement, in order to express their hopes for a more prosperous Romania which is not corrupt, which has a transparent public administration that pays attention to citizens’ needs, a Romania that looks more like the rest of Europe, a prosperous and peaceful Europe. President Iohannis then took measures to install a new Government. The United States plans to fully back President Iohannis, Prime Minister Ciolos and his Government,” the American diplomat stated in the interview broadcast on Saturday evening.

He expressed his hope that the change that took place in Romania will lead to a better direction. “We will remain a powerful ally, partner and friend of Romania. I believe there are now great hopes that Romania will enter a new, more positive direction, but this takes time and the Romanians’ support will be needed. We will see and we have to continue to hope that the Romanian institutions will offer the people that the street asked for in November,” the US Ambassador said.

In his opinion, Romania’s priority is to ensure sustainable economic growth, while corruption and lack of infrastructure are the main vulnerabilities. “In these efforts, corruption is an obstacle, as you pointed out. The US has staunchly supported Romania’s fight against corruption and I believe significant efforts have been made in this direction in recent years, by offering resources to prosecutors and measures that ensure an independent judiciary and the full respect for the rule of law.

Other obstacles include infrastructure. I have travelled a bit around Romania. Some of the roads are excellent, they remind me of highways in Germany, however more efforts are needed in order to link Romania’s road, rail and energy infrastructure with the rest of Europe. The efficient use of the resources available from European funds is, I believe, vital.

Then, listening to Romanian, American and foreign businessmen, another domain that is worthy of attention, and the Ciolos Government offers it its attention, is public administration, ensuring its efficiency, openness and transparency and using in the most efficient way possible the available resources coming from both the Romanian and the European Union taxpayers,” Klemm stated.
