Births to moms over 50 down 95.3 pct over past 58 years

The number of births to mothers aged over 50 decreased 95.3 percent from 1956 to 2014, specifically from 65 babies to 3, informs a release of the National Institute for Statistics (INS).

In four cases of the 65 babies born to women aged over 50, the age of the father was less than 19, while in 28 cases the father was aged over 50; 5 fathers were aged between 20 and 24; 7 between 25 and 29; 9 between 30 and 34; 8 between 35 and 39; 2 between 45 and 49; and in 2 cases the father’s age was not declared. At the opposite end, there were 189 babies born to mothers aged less than 15, and in 82 of the cases the father’s age was in the 25 – 29 bracket. The total number of live births was 425,704.

In 2014 there were 3 babies born to women over 50; the age of one father was between 35 and 39, and in 2 cases it was above 50. The number of babies born to mothers younger than 15 was 662; in 202 of these cases the father was aged less than 19. In 173 cases the age of the father was between 20 and 24, in 38 it was between 25 and 29; in 14 cases – between 30 and 39; and in one case it was above 50.

The total number of live births in 2014 was 183,785, by 56.82 percent less than in 1956, said the National Institute for Statistics.
