Ex-Prime Minister Victor Ponta announced that he would launch a political foundation next week. Its role will be the promotion of regional projects.
The foundation of the former PSD President will be launched on January 14, joined by colleagues from PSD, as well as former USL allies. Thus, Nicolae Banicioiu, ex-Health Minister, will be appointed Vice-Chairman of the foundation. The same position will be granted to ALDE co-Chair Daniel Constantin, according to Romania TV.
No more than two months after resigning from Palace Victoria, ex-Prime Minister Ponta seems to have long term political plans including a new candidacy to this year’s elections, as the mentioned source writes.
Not least, the affinity between Victor Ponta, on one hand, and Calin Popescu Tariceanu and Daniel Constantin, old partners in the governing coalition, on the other, caused discussions concerning the version of a political construction besides ALDE, Romania TV also shows.
Ponta’s move could be compared to the one assumed by ex-President Traian Basescu after the end of his term, in order to return to politics, claims the website presalibera.net.
“First, they created a foundation, “The Popular Movement”, that turned afterwards in a political party. Traian Basescu was not part of the foundation, although it was built around him, but he joined the party and became its president later. It is to be seen whether Victor Ponta’s foundation will follow the same path, considering that 2016 is an electoral year”, the quoted source shows.
