New Apostolic Nuncio to Bucharest presents his credentials to Foreign Minister

Minister of Foreign Affairs Lazar Comanescu met on Monday with the new Apostolic Nuncio to Bucharest, Titular Archbishop of Italica Miguel Maury Buendia (photo R), who presented his credentials, the Foreign Ministry said in a release to Agerpres.

According to the cited source, the Romanian chief diplomat congratulated Archbishop Miguel Maury Buendia on his appointment to the new position and assured him of the full support of the Romanian authorities with the accomplishment of his mission, including that of dean of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to Bucharest.

“The two officials highlighted the very good diplomatic relations between Romania and the Holy See, as well as the sides’ openness to in-depth cooperation, at sector level included,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Pope Francis appointed Monsignor Maury Buendia as Apostolic Nuncio to Romania on December 5, 2015. The position had been vacant since July, after the withdrawal of Monsignor Francisco-Javier Lozano; Archbishop Baudouin Biajila Muankembe had since served as head of the Nunciature.

Miguel Maury Buendia was born in Madrid on November 19, 1955. He was ordained on June 26, 1980 and appointed Archbishop in Archdiocese of Madrid. He received a Bachelor’s degree in dogmatic theology from the University of Salamanca and later obtained a doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome (1987).

In July 1987 he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See, subsequently acting as Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciatures in Rwanda, Uganda, Morocco and Nicaragua (1987-1996), Advisor to the Apostolic Nunciatures of Egypt, Slovakia, Macedonia and Ireland (1996-2004), and in 2004 he joined the Holy See’s State Secretariat.

In 2008, Miguel Maury Buendia was appointed Titular Archbishop of Italica and Apostolic Nuncio of Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan and Tajikistan, in the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. Apart from his mother tongue, Spanish, he is fluent in English, French and Slovenian.

Among other distinctions, Archbishop Miguel Maury Buendia received the Order of Isabella the Catholic (Kingdom of Spain), the Medal of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem (Holy See) and the Medal of the Order of Mercy (Kazakhstan).
