U.S. Ambassador visits the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives

U.S. Ambassador Hans Klemm and staff from the Embassy of the United States of America in Bucharest visited on Monday the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives (CNSAS). The Ambassador was briefed on the agency and its mission by Dragos Petrescu, President of the Board of CNSAS and members of the Board and then toured the Archives.

“CNSAS has an important role to play in Romania’s efforts to come to terms with its communist past. The direct exposure to both the volume of files and explanation about them is essential to our better understanding the Romanian experience,” said Ambassador Klemm after the visit.

According to a press release of the U.S Embassy, Ambassador Klemm and Embassy staff went to CNSAS to learn first-hand about the agency in charge of managing, researching and providing access to the files that the Securitate kept on many Romanians.
