PNL asked the Ombudsman to attack at the Constitutional Court the article in the law on the elections of local public administration authorities that stipulates electing Mayors would be completed in one voting round, PNL co-chair Alina Gorghiu declared on Tuesday.
“The open letter addressed to the Ombudsman is a document expressing the position assumed by PNL concerning the necessity to return to Mayors’ elections in two voting rounds”, PNL co-chair Alina Gorghiu declared, stating that “the election of Mayors (in two rounds, editor’s note) would lead to a correction of errors regarding the minimum standard of de representativeness and legitimacy the elections need to fulfil.
She declared that returning to two-round local elections were not a new formula, as they were used in local elections in 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008.
The co-chair of PNL made an appeal to PSD, advising Social-Democrats to “get rid of the complex of the second voting round”.
PNL co-chair Alina Gorghiu declared on Monday that returning to two-round local elections was not possible if the Government assumed responsibility in the parliament, considering that there was another law on this topic in Parliament procedure, and the most adequate solution was an emergency ordinance.
Social-Democrat leader Liviu Dragnea declared on Tuesday in Brussels that PSD might boycott local elections if the Government changed the electoral law in an electoral year, as demanded by Liberals and other political parties.
“If they continue this attempt to change electoral laws, PSD may go as far as boycotting elections”, the President of PSD declared.
President of the Constitutional Court, Augustin Zegrean, has declared recently that the only thing the Fundamental Law asked were free and correct elections, regardless of whether there were one, two or ten voting rounds.
Last year, the Parliament adopted a package of electoral laws and maintained the stipulation that was operational at that time, respectively voting Mayors in one voting round, supported at that time both by PSD and PNL. Social-Democrats still support this option and stress out the fact that laws cannot be changed a few months before the actual elections.
