Over 785,000 Hungarians outside Hungary, of whom almost one half are from Romania, have asked so far for Hungarian citizenship, Laszlo Tiboldi, vice president of the National Council of Hungarians of Transylvania (CNMT) told a press conference on Wednesday.
He specified that “information was obtained from from Hungary” and comprises citizenship applicants all over the world.
According to him, since 2011, the CNMT helps those who wish to get the Hungarian citizenship, by providing support to drafting documents in 31 offices open in Romania; so far, more than 230,000 ethnic Hungarians have asked for assistance.
“The CNMT, through its offices, keeps trying to help the Szeklers [Hungarian-speaking ethnic minority of central Romania] and the [ethnic] Hungarians willing to become Hungarian citizens to prepare their documents, through direct contacts with the Hungarian consulates,” said Tiboldi, according to Agerpres.
He unveiled that most of the applications are submitted to the offices in Targu Mures, Sfantu Gheorghe, Miercurea Ciuc and Oradea, and that the eldest person who has received the Hungarian citizenship was 102.
