PSD-ALDE collaboration protocol could be signed this week

PSD and ALDE could sign an electoral collaboration protocol for this year’s local elections on Wednesday, according to sources quoted by Romania TV. The President of PSD stated on Monday that the party he leads will “theoretically” sign the protocol of collaboration with ALDE this week, refusing to make statements about the way in which the two parties will take part in the parliamentary elections.

“I cannot tell you the exact date – we are engaged in talks. We met today too, we will meet again,” the PSD President stated. He added that from his point of view the physical document is finalized. Likewise, he rejected the idea that an ALDE faction close to Daniel Constantin would not favour the signing of this protocol.

Dragnea stated last week that his party is interested in signing a protocol with ALDE for the local elections.

Asked whether the PSD-ALDE protocol would also cover the parliamentary elections, Dragnea explained that the protocol will focus on the local elections. “I am very interested in signing a protocol with ALDE for the local elections,” Liviu Dragnea stated last week.

He pointed out that during the current Parliamentary sitting PSD, UNPR and ALDE will function as part of a very good parliamentary collaboration until the end of the sitting.

ALDE Co-President Calin Popescu Tariceanu (photo) stated on Monday that the electoral collaboration protocol with PSD will not represent “a mandatory mandate” at national level, the local branches of the party he leads having the power to decide in what concerns the advisability of backing joint candidates with the Social Democrats.

“This pact will not be at national level. So it isn’t a mandatory mandate, we want to give local branches which consider that they can maximize their chances in the elections the possibility of striking deals with PSD for the joint backing of candidates,” Tariceanu stated on Monday at the end of the Senate’s Standing Bureau meeting.

Asked whether there is a consensus within ALDE in what concerns the signing of the electoral collaboration protocol with PSD, Tariceanu replied:

“The moment we end up signing such a protocol, be convinced there is a consensus. Of course there is a consensus (with ALDE Co-President Daniel Constantin – editor’s note) and we have a common point of view.”

PSD President Liviu Dragnea and UNPR President Gabriel Oprea signed an electoral collaboration protocol for the local elections on February 4.
