PSD, ALDE sign collaboration protocol

The leaders of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and of the Liberals and Democrats Alliance (ALDE) signed on Wednesday an electoral collaboration protocol in view of the local elections. Last week, the Social Democrats signed a similar protocol with UNPR. PSD President Liviu Dragnea pointed out that there are talks on a joint PSD-ALDE-UNPR candidate for the Bucharest City Hall.

PSD President Liviu Dragnea explained that, in line with this protocol, ALDE and PSD can form local alliances only jointly, with PNL, PMP and other parties being ruled out.

Likewise, the PSD President explained that he will discuss the issue of a joint PSD-ALDE-UNPR candidate for the Bucharest City Hall.

The protocol signed on Wednesday also stipulates that after the local elections there will be negotiations on parliamentary elections too.

PSD President Liviu Dragnea considers that the political party led by Calin Popescu-Tariceanu and Daniel Constantin (ALDE) has chances to climb to second place on the political spectrum.

“I believe ALDE has chances to become the second-place party. At least this year. I don’t believe UNPR can aim for second place, at least not now,” Dragnea stated on Wednesday at the Palace of Parliament, after the signing of the PSD-ALDE electoral collaboration protocol.

The leader of Social Democrats explained that the chances he credits ALDE with have to do with the way PNL is evolving on the political scene.

“Given the way the new PNL is evolving, there are all chances for the real Liberals to end up on second place on the political scene, within reasonable time. There is an ever-increasing number of Liberals who do not understand how PNL has ended up being led by Blaga and Boc (…) and who have understood that PNL is being used as a mask for the former PDL; it’s just that these masks melt away very quickly because Romanians cannot forget what happened to them because of the Basescu-Boc Government,” Liviu Dragnea said.

In his opinion, an ever-growing number of Liberals will turn to ALDE.
“From our point of view, and not just ours, the Liberals, those who have Liberal convictions in Romania, will turn more and more toward this party (ALDE – editor’s note), a party led on the basis of the real Liberal principles,” Dragnea concluded.

PNL’s Predoiu: PSD’s protocols with UNPR and ALDE – bounced blank checks

National Liberal Party (PNL) First Vice President Catalin Predoiu stated on Wednesday that the protocols that PSD signed with UNPR and ALDE represents “bounced blank checks,” claiming that the two small parties will thus not enter Parliament.

“We saw the PSD-UNPR protocol, today we have seen the PSD-ALDE protocol. These are bounced blank checks offered by PSD members, by the party’s leadership, to two smaller parties – UNPR and ALDE. If UNPR and ALDE members imagine that by presenting this blank check at the ballot box they will enter Parliament I believe they will be wrong and will see at the right moment how much these two pieces of paper are worth,” Predoiu stated at the Palace of Parliament.

He claimed that PNL is not preoccupied with these protocols signed by PSD, but with preparing the campaign and the Liberal candidates instead.

“We prefer to be alongside our electorate and members, with our platforms built for citizens, than to be in a political assembly that does not correspond, at least not from our point of view, to citizens’ expectations,” Predoiu added.
