Romania will face Germany in the Fed Cup playoffs counting for a place in the World Group, according to the draws that took place on Tuesday.
Simona Halep (photo) and her colleagues were lucky, being set to play at home. The Romanian players got a lucky break after they previously found out, the day before the draws, that they would not be included in the top seed bowl.
Not only did they manage to avoid two extremely difficult opponents – Russia and Italy – but they will also play at home, most likely in Cluj once again. Germany reached the playoffs after losing to Bacsinszky’s and Hingis’ Switzerland in the Fed Cup quarterfinals, score 2-3. Germany is a redoubtable team too, their best player undoubtedly being Angelique Kerber, the fresh winner of the Australian Open.
Romania will meet Germany on April 16-17.
