Justice Minister considers reappointment of chief anti-corruption prosecutor

On Friday evening, Raluca Prună (photo), the Minister of Justice, pointed out the all the information she collected until present, determine her to propose the reinvestment of Laura Codruta Kovesi, as the heaad of National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), Agerpres reports.

Raluca Prună underlined that, according to law, she can propose the reinvestment of the current general prosecutor of DNA. Furthermore, the Minister of Justice, said that she will not wait the audit from the DNA to make the proposal.

“The position is becoming vacant at the mid-May and I would like to repeat the regulations. So, the law establishes the possibility to reinvest a person too and if law allows this thing I think that it is absolutely logical to infer that someone who had measurable and statistic results, issued from the balance sheet of the institution which is done annually. As a consequence, in these situations we shouldn’t be hypocritical and play the procedure. I won’t do this and I am waiting for the DNA’s balance sheet but all the facts so far lead me to think that I had to do a simple thing: I have to apply the law and to reinvest the DNA’s chief prosecutor,”, declared the Justice Minister for a TV channel.

The minister said that the results of DNA under the leadership of Chief Prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi are held not only at the domestic level of Romania but in the reports which mark the “remarkable progress” of the institution under her mandate.
Laura Codruța Kovesi is the Chief Prosecutor of DNA since 2013. Until being appointed in the position, Laura Codruța Kovesi help, from September 2006, the position of Prosecutor General at the Public Prosecutor’s Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice and she member of the Superior Council of Magistracy.
