Romania forced to pay over EUR 250,000 to 17 citizens, in Revolution case

Romania has once again been condemned by the ECHR in the Revolution case, the Romanian state having to pay over a quarter of a million Euros to 17 citizens.

The 17 citizens won their case at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Tuesday, ‘Romania Libera’ informs. According to the aforementioned source, the plaintiffs will receive EUR 15,000 apiece, so a total of EUR 255,000 plus court fees.

The 17 citizens argued that there have been no efficient investigations into the killing of their relatives during the 1989 Revolution.

General Prosecutor’s Office to reanalyze Revolution case

First Deputy Prosecutor General Bogdan Licu, currently interim Presecutor General, has asked the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ) for the Revolution case file, in order to reanalyze it.

The Press Bureau of the Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the information on Monday. Bogdan Licu’s request comes after ’21 December’ Association President Teodor Maries filed a new complaint against the decision to close the case.

If Maries’ complaint is admitted, the case will be reopened.

On 14 October 2015, the Military Prosecutor’s Office closed the case that concerns the December 1989 events that left 709 persons dead, 1,855 injured by gunshots, 343 injured in other circumstances and 924 persons detained.

Subsequently, the ’21 December’ Association and over 100 victims and heirs of the victims attacked at the ICCJ the decision to close the case.
