Flu kills 17 Romanians in the past week

Flu has made new victims in the last week of February, 17 persons with severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) losing their lives.

In the last week of February there were 39 cases of SARI, 5 cases more compared to the week before, but 10 cases more compared to the same week last year.

Overall, 50 persons died since the start of the flu season – 47 confirmed seasonal flu virus A(H1) cases and 3 seasonal flu virus A(H3) cases, the most recent report authored by the National Centre for the Monitoring and Control of Transmissible Diseases shows.

Based on age groups, flu killed 3 infants, 18 members of the 15-49 age group, 21 members of the 50-64 age group and 8 members of the 65+ age group.

However, of the 50 persons that died, 44 had pre-existing medical conditions and 41 had not taken flu shots.

Most deaths were registered in Bucharest (17).
