National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) prosecutors placed businessman Gigi Becali under criminal prosecution on Wednesday, accusing him of perjury and of aiding and abetting.
Gigi Becali went to the DNA on Wednesday in order to be heard in a case in which he is suspected of perjury after he changed the statements made in the case in which businessman Gabriel Popoviciu is on trial for having allegedly illegally obtained 224 hectares of land in the Baneasa area.
While leaving the institution, Becali confirmed that he is the target of a criminal prosecution.
“Yes, they notified me. It’s in God’s hands now. The charge is of malfeasance in office. In malfeasance in office, it doesn’t matter what I say. Paperwork is involved there. That crime is proved through paperwork, not words,” Gigi Becali stated.
On February 15, Gigi Becali went to the Bucharest Court of Appeals (CAB) in order to be heard as witness in the case in which businessman Puiu Popoviciu is involved. In the courtroom, Becali rescinded the statements he made at the DNA in 2006, statements against Popoviciu. Becali said the statements made 10 years ago are no longer valid because some of them were based on gossip. Moreover, the businessman pointed out that he no longer even knows exactly what he stated before investigators back then.
At the end of the court session, prosecutors announced that DNA is taking note that George Becali committed perjury.
