National Liberal Party (PNL) Co-President Alina Gorghiu stated on Monday that the Liberals will not form an electoral alliance with Traian Basescu’s party or the M10 party for the Bucharest City Hall and pointed out that Catalin Predoiu’s statements were his personal opinions, which are not binding for the party.
“Catalin Predoiu presented a reality as obvious as possible for anyone. The right-wing electorate is divided by many options. PNL is a prominent option, however I do not deny that we need every vote that could be directed to other candidates at one point. Each party has the right to support its candidate, but it might think that the vote should go in favour of the Right. If you refer to Catalin Predoiu’s statement about possible alliances with M10, with Traian Basescu, I saw that they aroused the interest of public opinion and I want to be very blunt and tell you that PNL has adopted a decision within its leadership bodies, it will form no kind of pre-electoral or post-electoral alliance, neither with Traian Basescu nor with M10,” Alina Gorghiu stated on Realitatea TV.
The PNL Co-President said that Predoiu expressed a “personal opinion” when he mentioned Traian Basescu among PNL’s potential allies.
“I would actually like to shatter the option of an alliance with Traian Basescu for the Bucharest City Hall. He [Catalin Predoiu – editor’s note] launched a call for these parties’ voters. It was a personal opinion. The party’s decision is very clear from this point of view,” Gorghiu added.
She pointed out that the Liberals will not form an electoral alliance with former Head of State Traian Basescu or PSD, a party which, according to Gorghiu, “does not know how to be a partner in any kind of alliance.” In this context, Gorghiu emphasised that PNL needs every vote that could be cast for other right-wing candidates.
“I want to be very blunt and tell you that PNL has adopted a decision within its leadership bodies, it will form no kind of pre-electoral or post-electoral alliance, neither with Traian Basescu nor with M10. (…) This aspect was not open for consultations and will not be. I would actually want to shatter the option of an alliance with Traian Basescu for the Bucharest City Hall,” the PNL Co-President stated.
Gorghiu pointed out that she is calling on the voters of the other right-wing parties to understand why they should concentrate their votes on PNL’s candidate for the Bucharest City Hall.
“I would like to tell you that who does not vote for PNL candidates in the local elections will aid PSD in winning the Bucharest City Hall and District Mayoralties. It’s a two-way race. Bucharest, which deserves much more than it currently has, has been under PSD management for almost eight years. (…) Catalin Predoiu expressed a reality as obvious as possible for anyone, that the right wing is divided. We need every vote that could be directed to other candidates. (…) One could say that such a vote is cast to the detriment of the Right,” Gorghiu added.
In what concerns the Social Democrats, Gorghiu pointed out that they do not know how to be partners in any kind of alliance.
“All of us who formed alliances with them at one point noticed that they are not a serious partner,” the PNL Co-President added.
