Ibanesti cheese entered in EU register of PGI

The European Commission published on Monday in the Official Journal of the European Union the ad on the award of the Protected Geographical Indication status to the Ibanesti cheese.

‘Ten days ago we officially had the Sibiu salami – a product of extraordinary quality – officially recognised in Brussels, Romania’s second EU-protected product. Today I can officially announce you that the entry of the Ibanesti cheese in the PGI register was published yesterday in the Official Journal. So slowly, things get moving,’ said the minister.

He underscored that Romania’s rural areas are the source of high quality products, but the locals should be advised to apply for and use the funds that are set at their disposal for this purpose.

‘We will also produce under the name of mountain product. The necessary legislation was worked out, we now need to promote it and I hope that those products of exceptional quality coming from an unpolluted environment reach the consumer’s table. It is very important that our producers realize that by a high quality product, they can obtain added value for a decent living,’ remarked Irimescu.

On March 10, the Sibiu salami was officially awarded the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, 20 days after the publication of the ad in the Official Journal of the European Union.
