The Sand Marathon, the only marathon from Europe which takes place on sand, will be held on Sunday, 27th March, in Mamaia. Until now, over 500 athletes from Romania and from other countries registered for the novel race from the border of the Black Sea and hundreds of supporters announced their presence.
The international sport event, now at its thirds edition, is organized by the SanaSport Sports Association and Radio Constance in partnership with the Country Department of Sport and Youth Constanta, Constanta City Hall and Dobrogea Litoral Water Basin Administration. The Sand Marathon addresses both amateur runners and professional sportsmen, and it contains three trials (marathon, semi marathon and a 10km race) and the Family Run Cross Country race (around 1km) – which aims to bring closer to sport both parents and their kids.
Prizes worth 26.600 lei
The sponsors have prepared prizes totaling 26.600 lei, 22 prizes for the Open Category, 18 prizes for the sixth categories of ages and a an additional award of 500 lei for breaking the marathon record. In the same time, there will be rewarded the first 5 ranked families at the Family Run Cross Country Race.
Participants run to decrease neonatal infant mortality rate
At this edition, the participants together with the organizers have decided to fight for a good cause, namely the reconstruction and modernization of the Intensive Therapy Section for Newborns and of the Premature Department of the Clinical Emergencies Hospital from Constanta.
Through the social project figurative entitled “Give the first smile”, initiated by the Giving Wings Association, “Sanasport” sport’s community will fight to decrease the neonatal infant mortality rate, which reached alarming levels in Constanta. In the county, the rate is three times higher than the European average, and a child dies every week in Constanta, in the Intensive Care Therapy, before reaching one month.
“This year edition of Sand Marathon is even more special as we all understood the need of saving the newborns because of the poor medical infrastructure of the care system from Constanta County. We are going to run to save lives; we are going to run for health and to promote at an International level the Romanian Seaside. The international community of sportsmen is with us. During the lasts edition it proved that it respects us for what we are doing.
“We are happy that this year many international athletes have register and we hope that, from year to year, we can bring more and more sport’s lovers to the Romanian seaside”, declared the President of SanaSport Sport Association, Daniel Antonaru.
SanaSport Sport Association is a non-governmental organization, founded in 2013, which has as main objective the promotion of the importance of sport in society and the improvement of the fitness and health among residents in Constanta County.
