Four candidates in race for office of Prosecutor General

Four candidates have entered the race for the office of Prosecutor General, after Tiberiu Nitu resigned in early February. The four prosecutors who have filed their candidacies within the legally stipulated period are Oana Schmidt-Haineala (photo), Codrut Olaru, Augustin Lazar and Gheorghe Ivan, Ministry of Justice informs in a press release.

According to the timetable, the candidates will hold talks with Justice Minister Raluca Pruna by March 22.

Oana Schmidt-Haineala is elected member of the Superior Magistracy Council (CSM), having chaired the Council in 2013. Deputy Prosecutor General Codrut Olaru was Chief Prosecutor of DIICOT in 2007-2013. Augustin Lazar is Doctor of Law and Prosecutor General at the Prosecutor’s Office of the Alba Court of Appeals.

According to Law 303/2004 on the status of judges and prosecutors, the appointment to the office of Prosecutor General is made by the Romanian President, through decree, at the proposal of the Justice Minister and CSM’s advice.
