Average number of pensioners by 51,000 smaller in 2015 than year before

The average number of pensioners was by 51,000 smaller in 2015 than in the previous year, standing at 5.306 million; the average monthly pension of 892 lei was by 5.4 percent higher in 2015 compared was 2014, show data with the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
‘The ratio of the average number of pensioners under the public social security system to the number of employees was 10 to 10; the average monthly pension was 892 lei, up 5.4 percent from the previous year,’ INS says.
There are significant local variations in the ratio of the average number of pensioners under the public social security system to the number of employees, from only 5 to 10 in Bucharest City to 17 to 10 in Giurgiu County.
In the same reporting period, the average pension under the public social security system was 886 lei, while the ratio of the average pension for age and full length of service under the public social security system (tax and health social security contribution excluded) to the net average wage was 57.8 percent (as to 60.6 percent in 2014).
There are significant regional differences in the average public social security pension, with the gap between the minimum and the maximum value exceeding 400 lei (711 lei in Giurgiu County as to 1,122 lei in Bucharest).
According to INS, pensioners under the social security system account for an overwhelming 99.9 percent of the total number of pensioners. Pensioners under the public social security system represent 88.3 percent of the total, and old age pensioners account for 73.9 percent of the total number of the pensioners under the social security system. Pensioners in the early and part-time early retirement categories account for 2.1 percent.
‘The real average pension index to the previous year, calculated as a ratio of the nominal pension to the consumer price index, was 105 percent,’ adds INS.
The total number of beneficiaries of the Government’s Emergency Ordinance No.6/2009 on the establishment of the guaranteed minimum social pension (currently social benefits) was of 608,200 people in 2015, of whom: 478,200 in the public social security system (representing 10.2 percent of all pensioners in this category); 130,000 people from the former farmers’ pension system, representing 23 percent of the total.
