Agriculture to receive EUR 20 bln in European grants in 2014-2020

The agro-food sector’s strategy for 2020-2030 was presented on Wednesday within the Government, the main goal being to cover the domestic consumption needs in the case of most agro-food products, Agriculture Minister Achim Irimescu stated. “I have to admit that it is the strategy prepared by the previous Government, but I hope, first of all, that it is the sector’s strategy and it only has the goal to clearly set some objectives that Romania’s agriculture should attain. (…) It’s difficult to discuss the financial side of this strategy; it seeks only some trajectories that the agro-food sector has to follow. Bearing in mind the period concerned, 2020-2030, we cannot even talk about the European financing side. If, for 2014-2020, we have the clear figures, namely EUR 20 bln in European grants for agriculture, plus another EUR 5-6 bln from national funds, unfortunately I cannot say what the financing will be for this strategy because we don’t know the what the policy will be for 2020-2030,” Irimescu said.

In the Agriculture Minister’s opinion, the main objectives of every agricultural sector are to manage to cover the domestic consumption or the production needed to cover the population’s consumption of most agro-food products, bearing in mind that Romania has been a net importer for years.
