Over 70pct of Romanians in favour of smoking ban in all public spaces

Over 70pct of Romanians are in favour of the smoking ban in all public spaces, including in bars, restaurants and cafes, according to the Inscop-Adevarul: Smoking and anti-smoking law poll.

The poll, presented in a statement sent to Agerpres, reveals that 29.5pct of Romanians identify themselves as smokers, while non-smokers amount to 69.5pct. The remaining 1pct of respondents did not know or did not answer.

The law banning smoking in public spaces is endorsed by over two-thirds of Romanians. Specifically, 70.3pct of respondents agree that smoking should be banned in all public spaces, including in bars and cafes, while 28.7pct do not agree with the measure. Moreover, the low percentage of those who did not know or did not answer shows that intense debates generated by the topic polarized the public.

The “INSCOP – The truth about Romania Poll” was commissioned by Adevarul and conducted by Inscop Research on 21-28 March 2016, on a representative multi-layer sample of 1,063 respondents aged 18 and above. It has a plus/minus three percent error margin and an accuracy rate of 95pct. The poll was based on a questionnaire filled in by interviewers at the residence of respondents in 39 counties and in Bucharest municipality, in 92 localities. The sample was validated based on official data of the 2011 population census.
