Senator Andrei Volosevici, PNL’s candidate for the Ploiesti City Hall, has announced he will bow out of the electoral race after he was charged in a corruption case that took place during his first term as mayor, in 2008-2012.
The move took many by surprise, since the situations in which candidates state they are unfazed by case files were not few in number, but also because Volosevici was credited in opinion polls with the main shot at winning the local elections in Ploiesti.
“On March 24, I was summoned at DNA Ploiesti and I was informed that I am suspected of corruption crimes committed in 2012. Concerning these aspects, I am convinced that I will prove my innocence, but I want to do so at relevant institutions, without trying to play the victim publicly. Given this new situation I find myself in, out of respect for my party colleagues and particularly for you, the people of Ploiesti, already hard tested by the incompetence of those who have been in charge of the city since 2012, I have decided to withdraw my bid for the Ploiesti City Hall,” Andrei Volosevici writes.
On Monday, he was at DNA Ploiesti in order to be heard in the case that concerns him.
According to a DNA press release, mayor Volosevici allegedly asked a businessman, in 2012, the denouncer in this case, for RON 80,000 – a sum he received in three instalments during the local elections campaign (in which he was running for another term) – in return for making sure a company the businessman had a stake in would be awarded a public contract. The public contract was related to the construction of an overpass in Ploiesti.
PSD Botosani asks PNL’s Flutur to follow his colleague’s example
The leaders of PSD’s Botosani branch asked PNL Botosani Co-President Catalin Flutur to withdraw his bid for the Botosani City Hall, a PSD communiqué shows.
The Social Democrats want Flutur to follow the example of Andrei Volosevici, the Liberal candidate in Ploiesti, and withdraw his bid, given the fact that the DNA is handling a criminal probe against him in several cases concerning his previous activity as Botosani Mayor.
The Social Democrats made mention of PNL’s integrity criteria, according to which this party will not propose candidates prosecuted for corruption. Catalin Flutur is suspect in a corruption case, being accused of malfeasance in office.
