The second three-year term of Laura Codruta Kovesi as chief prosecutor of the National Anticorruption Directorate begins on May 16, according to the appointment decree signed on Wednesday by President Klaus Iohannis, to be published Thursday in the Official Gazzette.
Kovesi was born on 15 May 1975 in Sfantu Gheorghe, Covasna County.
She graduated from a high school in Medias, and played basketball at Medias Sports Club School. She was selected in the Romania’s basketball cadets team, Eruopean vice champion the European vice-champion in 1989.
She graduated from the Faculty of Law of the Babes Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca in 1995. She took postgraduate studies in Judicial Law and Legal Science at the Faculty of Law of the Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu (1996-1997).
She is a PhD in criminal law from the University of West Timisoara, with a thesis on ‘Combatting organized crime through criminal law provisions.’
She worked as a prosecutor at the Prosecutor’s Office with Sibiu Court (1995-1999); prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Sibiu County Tribunal (1999 – 2000); chief prosecutor of the Office for Combating Corruption and Organized Crime of the Prosecutors Office of the Sibiu County Tribunal (2000-2002); chief prosecutor of the Office for Combating Organized Crime and Anti-drug of the Prosecutors Office of the Sibiu County Tribunal (2202 – 2004); chief prosecutor of the Criminal Investigation and Forensics Section of the Prosecutors Office of the Sibiu County Tribunal (1 September – 1 December 2004); prosecutor (1 December 2004 – 1 January 2006), then chief prosecutor (1 January 2006 – 2 October 2006) of the Sibiu Territorial Office of the Direction for Investigations of Organized Crime and Terorrism.
Between 2 October 2006 and 2 October 2012 she was Attorney General of the Prosecutors Office with the High Court of Cassation and Justice (Romania’s Supreme Court).
From 3 October 2012 to 16 May 2013, she worked at the Permanent Representation of Romania to the European Union, as High Representative of the Ministry of Justice for the relations with the European Commission concerning the Mechanism for Cooperation and Verification.

In October 2008, she was awarded the ‘Cybercrime Fighter Award’ by the American company McAfee and.
On 18 May 2011, the President of France made her Officer of the National Order of Merit.
On 2 October 2012, President Traian Basescu bestowed on her the National Order ‘Star of Romania’ in rank of Knight.
On 10 April 2014, the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest recognized her as Woman of Courage for Romania, under the International Women of Courage awards of the U.S. Department of State.
