Ceausescus’ personal belongings, up for grabs

Personal belongings, diplomatic gifts, and hunting trophies that belonged to the Ceausescus will be up for grabs on April 19 at an auction by Casa Artmark, part of a “Golden Era” themed event.

Among the items to be auctioned is a deer hide case for a double-barreled hunting rifle used by Nicolae Ceausescu while on hunting trips. The officially certified item has a starting price of 250 euros. Another personal belonging of the late communist dictator is an officially-certified pen holder of stag antlers, which starting price is 180 euros.

The bidders are also shown two pairs of bespoken shoes ordered by Elena Ceausescu, made by the Romanian Guban shoemaker patterned on models from the German Quelle and Neckerman catalogues. The starting price for the two pairs is 400-500 euros.

Also auctioned will be objects reminding of Romanians’ daily life in the Golden Era, as the communist period used to be called, 1980’s posters, including the original poster for the “Star Wars” film in Romania, for 150-euro starting price; the first issue of the Libertatea newspaper of December 22, 1989, for 30 euros; vinyl discs of the 1983 Flacara circle shows.

The exhibition with the items on sale can be visited until April 19 at Cesianu-Racovita Palace in Bucharest, the Artmark main office, where the auction will also be held.
