Choreographer Johan Kobborg accepts position of National Opera House Ballet artistic director

Minister of Culture Vlad Alexandrescu announced on Saturday that Danish dancer and choreographer Johan Kobborg has accepted the position of artistic director of the National Opera House Ballet.

“I’m glad to learn that Johan Kobborg has accepted the position of artistic director of the Bucharest-based National Opera House Ballet. Now I am sure the Opera has the best professionals at its helm. Vlad Conta, Tiberiu Soare, Johan Kobborg. Good luck to all,” the Minister wrote on his Facebook account.

The Culture Minister had announced on Friday having proposed to conductor Vlad Conta to take over as interim director general of the National Opera House in Bucharest, while conductor Tiberiu Soare was to act as deputy director.

Tiberiu Soare was appointed interim director general of the National Opera House (ONB) on April 4 and one day later, dancer and choreographer Johan Kobborg announced on his Twitter account that he had found his name removed from the website of the Bucharest National Opera and Ballet House where he had been officially named as artistic director at the end of 2013. “It is with heavy heart I find my name removed as artistic director of the ONB company. I have nothing but love for the company. I will dream one day of returning and finishing what we started,” Kobborg wrote.

In response, Tiberiu Soare said that the change on the ONB website had only been made because the institution’s staff plan did not formally include a position titled “Ballet artistic manager”.

The latest move thus defuses tensions that had escalated this week to a boycott of the Opera dancers in support of Kobburg.
