Social Democrats still want Tariceanu at Senate’s helm

PSD President Liviu Dragnea announced on Monday, after the party’s National Standing Bureau meeting, that the Social Democrats have decided to continue backing Calin Popescu Tariceanu (photo) in the position of Senate Speaker, despite PNL’s warnings. PNL proposed his revocation and replacement with a Social Democrat. PNL wanted to start the revocation procedure and collected signatures in support of the bid, but gave up because it lacked support from UNPR and UDMR.

“Our political decision is to continue backing Mr. Tariceanu as Senate Speaker, with there being no reasons to replace him. I am going at the Senate group in order to inform our colleagues,” Dragnea said, pointing out that this political decision was adopted unanimously.

Asked whether PSD still supports Olguta Vasilescu in the race for the Craiova City Hall, Liviu Dragnea answered affirmatively. “Yes. I said it publicly and I say it again,” the Social Democrat pointed out.

Asked when the PSD-UNPR protocol on local election will be signed, Liviu Dragnea answered: “I’m not the one signing it. A national protocol has been approved, and each party branch (including Bucharest) is free to do it and will do it – from what I understand – on Thursday.”

Concerning the TVR vote, Liviu Dragnea said that “there are serious reservations in what concerns the vote for Ms. Ghiurco,” because she is allegedly involved in a lawsuit with TVR. “All colleagues said they can’t really vote for her, because this situation is out of place,” Dragnea said, referring to journalist Monica Ghiurco.
