Romanian tennis player Irina Begu landed an extraordinary victory by 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-3 against Spanish Garbine Muguruza on Monday night, in the second round of the 4,771,360-dollar WTA Premier tournament in Madrid.
Begu (25 y.o, WTA No 34) prevailed against the WTA No 4 in a 2 hours 42 minutes match, with several score upsets.
The Romanian thus qualified to the round of 16 and secured a 59,490 euro cheque and 120 WTA points.
She had lost her two previous confrontations with Muguruza (22 y.o.) in the 2012 quarterfinals in Bucharest, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5, and in last year’s Fed Cup, 6-3, 6-2.
Begu’s next oponent will be American Christina McHale (23 y.o., WTA No 59), who surprisingly passed 13th seed Czech Karolina Pliskova by 7-6 (3), 6-4.
McHale has defeated Begu in their only match so far, 6-2, 6-3 in the first round in San Diego, in 2008.
