President Iohannis asks candidates to engage in clean elections campaign

President Klaus Iohannis on Thursday sent a message to the candidates in the local elections telling them to conduct a clean campaign and urging the administrations to do their job and organise the June ballot impeccably.

“I am telling candidates: Keep your campaign clean! Go and present your electoral platforms, talk to the people, find out what their problems are, come up with solutions! Focus your campaign on projects, instead of scandal or filth,” Iohannis said at Cotroceni Palace in a televised address to the nation on Thursday evening, occasioned by the start of the electoral campaign for the local elections scheduled on June 5.

He asked the administrations to do their duty and organise the elections in an impeccable manner.

“To the administration I am simply saying: Do your duty! Do your duty and organise the ballot impeccably!” was the President’s message.

“Follow the election campaign, go to electoral assemblies, ask your candidate how he or she sees local development, ask uncomfortable questions, evaluate him or her, and in the end please go to vote. Every four years the destiny of your area resides in your vote. Use this vote!,” Iohannis concluded.

President Iohannis to voters: Take a good look at candidates

President Klaus Iohannis has asked Romanians to vote on June 5 and added that it is important for them to analyze what party the candidates belong to, given that some parties “mime” internal reform.

“The campaign for local elections is starting. On June 5, we will elect the mayor of the locality we live in, we will elect the City Council and County Council. These elections are very important. The people we will elect are responsible for the destiny of the locality in which we live. Take a good look at the candidates! Take a good look at the candidates and think if that preferred by you is a man of integrity, and he/she must not have legal issues. Take a good look whether he/she is a good manager, because they will be responsible for the management of the locality you live in. Take a look at the team behind him. Take a look at the team of advisors he/she comes with. See if they are serious people. Take a look at the candidates and ask them if they know the problems of your locality, whether they come with solutions,” Iohannis said at the Cotroceni Palace.

In the opinion of the head of state, it is important to see also the party the candidates belong to. “There will be some who will try to tell you that all parties are the same. It is not true! Not all are the same,” said Iohannis.

He recalled that six months ago he asked political parties to reform. “Some have taken it very seriously and started the process of internal reform. Others mime the reform. Also the party the candidate comes from is important,” said Iohannis.

“Follow the electoral campaign, go to election rallies, ask your candidate how he/she sees the development of the locality, ask uncomfortable questions, evaluate them and, at the end, please go and vote. Every four years, the destiny if your locality is in your vote. Exercise this vote,” President Iohannis urged.
