“Oedipus Month at London” celebrates Enescu’s masterpiece in UK

“Oedipus Month at London” is a wide program designed to celebrate Enescu’s masterpiece through musical events, exhibitions, conferences and special screenings, having famous stars of the Opera as protagonists, musicologists of international level, as well as top artists who are fascinated by Enescu’s music. The event is organized in this period, until June 8, by the Romanian Cultural Institute in London.

According to ICR London’s website, the program is built on the absolute premiere of the “Oedipus” opera in UK, which will take place on May 23 at the Royal Opera, and will be performed both on the famous musical scene from Covent Garden and at the Romanian Cultural Institute.

The stars of the event are: director Valentina Carrasco, mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly, music writer Dan Dediu, soprano Lauren Fagan, Kasper Holten, the Musical Director of the Royal Opera, conductor Leo Hussain, director Alex Ollé, bass-baritone Johan Reuter, bass Sir John Tomlinson, soprano Rodica Vica and baritone Iuri Iurciuc.

The program is created by ICR London in association with Covent Garden Royal Opera, with the support of the Embassy of Romania to the United Kingdom of Great Britain, and of the “George Enescu” National Museum in Bucharest.

“Oedipus Month” in the British Capital is similar to the program called “Enescu Month at London”, which took place in the spring 2015, on the occasion of the premiere “Symphony No.3” by George Enescu at the Royal Festival Hall, performed by London Philharmonic Orchestra, under the coordination of the current artistic director of the “Enescu” Festival, namely the conductor Vladimir Jurowski, according to the quoted source.
