+ 10 social businesses awarded EUR 350,000 at second edition of “Made in Andrei’s Country” programme
OMV Petrom has selected 10 winners at the second edition of the “Made in Andrei’s Country” social business competition. The programme supports business ideas that solve social problems, create jobs and bring social and economic value to Romanian communities. The “Made in Andrei’s Country” competition is financed by OMV Petrom and organised in partnership with the NESsT Foundation.
“Four years after OMV Petrom’s first investment in social entrepreneurship, we are happy to see that we backed viable businesses, two years of age and with strong social and economic impact. Social businesses can be a long-term solution for Romania. They create jobs and indirect revenue, generate revenues for local budgets and, at the same time, address social problems,” OMV Petrom Sustainability Manager Mona Nicolici stated.
The 10 social entrepreneurs plan to generate over 35 jobs in the first year of activity. Likewise, during the same period they will generate revenue for another 78 locals. Apart from economic benefits, the value of a social business also resides in solving community problems. The domains tackled by the 10 social businesses include: ensuring senior home care, production of aromatic plants, bio vegetables, vegetable oils and clothing items sewn by hand. Likewise, many of the businesses plan to train members of the community in order to raise their employment chances.
The winning business plans will be implemented in 10 communities in 8 counties: Marca – Salaj, Poiana Campina and Scorteni – Prahova, Madulari – Valcea, Gura Ocnitei – Dambovita, Berca – Buzau, Aninoasa – Dambovita, Marghita – Bihor, Videle – Teleorman and Micesti – Arges.
The first edition of “Made in Andrei’s Country” created social businesses in 7 communities in Romania. In two years’ time, they generated over 24 permanent and 32 seasonal jobs. As part of the project, entrepreneurs trained over 350 persons and generated income for 217 locals.
During the two editions of the “Made in Andrei’s Country” competition, OMV Petrom offered total financing of EUR 700,000 for the development of 20 social businesses. These investments come on top of approximately 2,000 hours of consultancy offered by the NESsT Foundation, consultancy from which social businesses benefited both in the incubation stage as well as in their first year of existence.
