Film director Mungiu : Distribution is now the biggest problem related to filmmaking

The absence of a distribution network is a real issue related to filmmaking that has to be solved so that the public may have access to films, film director Cristian Mungiu told a news conference in Suceava.

”It seems to me that the big issue we are now facing in the film industry is related to distribution networks, because although we make the films, the important thing is that they are watched, or else we make them for nothing,” said Mungiu according to Agerpres.

He praised the city of Suceava for its initiative to refurbish a downtown cinema hall.

”There are initiatives, such as the one in Suceava, that make the cities successful in organisational terms so that we may screen our films,” said Mungiu.

He added that quality criteria should be followed when films are assessed for funding.

”Fair funding of all the films in Romania is important, following quality criteria in their assessment (…) I hope the attention of the [Culture] ministry will be somehow steered toward both directions: better distribution and fairer and wider collection of the filmmaking funds, because if there are more than one funds and more honesty in distributing the money here will also be better films,” said the director.

On a promotion tour of his ”Bacalaureat” (Graduation), which has recently won him ex-aequo the best director award at the Cannes International Film Festival, Mungiu said he chose to stop first in Suceava, because the city’s invitation was the most generous and also the earliest made.
