More than 340,000 lei raised at Sibiu half-marathon that saw Carmen Iohannis join as runner

Over 340,000 lei were raised for 21 social projects at the Sibiu half marathon that saw 2,500 runners lace up, including the President’s wife Carmen Iohannis, informs a release to Agerpres on Monday.

The participants came from all over the country, but also from the Republic of Moldova, the Netherlands, Germany and China.

Declared by the organizers Romania’s largest fundraising sports event, the Sibiu half marathon also gathered over one thousand supporters, President Klaus Iohannis included. Donations are open until July 1, the organizers said.

Some 300 volunteers joined the extended organization team that saw to the seamless unfolding of the event, and more than 20 local companies got actively involved, both by encouraging their employees to join the event in high numbers, and by setting up a refreshment stand in the city’s Grand Square.

“The fifth edition of the Sibiu half marathon was well above expectations, as there were about 1,200 runners more than last year, which required extra efforts from the event’s organisers. It was quite hard, but it was also beautiful. We succeeded in gathering people from all over the country, let aside that the entire Sibiu community mobilized to race for their favorite causes. If Sibiu succeeded in gathering 2,500 runners for a half marathon, the city definitely deserves to join the cities that have a marathon tournament,” said Ciprian Ciocan, executive director of the event’s organizer – the Sibiu Community Foundation.

The half marathon will turn next year into the Sibiu marathon.
