Cartarescu, Patapievici, Stanca win USR 2015 awards

Authors Mircea Cartarescu (photo), Horia-Roman Patapievici and Dan Stanca are among the recipients of the 2015 awards of the Romanian Writers’ Guild (USR).

USR reports on its website that its 2015 National Prize in Literature went to Mircea Cartarescu; the prose prize went to Dan Stanca for “Ghetsimani ’51” (Gethsemane ’51) (Cartea Romaneasca Publishing House), while a special prize was awarded to Horia-Roman Patapievici for his “Partea nevazuta decide totul” (The Unseen Decides Everything) (Humanitas).

The USR poetry award went to Vasile Dan for his “Lentila de contact” (Contact Lens) (Mirador); the award for best criticism, literary essay or history book went to Mircea Anghelescu for his “Lana de aur. Calatorii si calatoriile in literatura romana” (The Golden Fleece. Travellers and Travels in Romanian Literature) (Cartea Romaneasca); the award for best book for children or teens was bestowed on Petre Craciun for “Cu Andersen in regatul povestilor” (Following Andersen in the Realm of Fairytales) (Zorio).

Debut awards went to Simona Antonescu for her “Fotograful curtii regale” (The Photographer of the Royal Court) (Cartea Romaneasca), Robert G. Elekes for poetry book “Aici imi iau dintii-n spinare si adio” (Where I Take My Teeth and Go) (Tracus Arte), while the USR award for translation went to Leo Butnaru for a panorama of the Russian vanguard (Tipo Moldova).

The prize for best playwright was not awarded.

The Andrei Bantas Foundation award for best translation from English went to Ariadna Ponta for her Romanian version of Harper Lee’s “Go Set a Watchman,” while the two Mircea Ciobanu awards went to Medeea Iancu for her “Cantarea care a biruit toate cantarile” (The Song to Win All Songs) (Paralela 45) and to Maria Pilchin for “Poeme pentru Ivan Gogh” (Poetry for Ivan Gogh) (Paralela 45).

The USR 2015 prize jury was made up of Iulian Boldea, Tudor Cristea, Gabriela Gheorghisor, Ioan Holban, Vasile Spiridon, Alex. Stefanescu (chairman) and Razvan Voncu. The jury selected the award recipients in a secret ballot on May 31 from among the books nominated for 2015, according to USR.
