The heroes’ example of courage and sense of duty are a priceless legacy passed down to the young generations, is President Klaus Iohannis’ message on Heroes Day celebrated this Thursday.
“Today we commemorate all those fallen in the line of duty on the battlefields or who died in detention to defend our fundamental rights, for freedom, justice and for keeping our Christian faith. Through their courage and dedication, the heroes of the Romanian nation defended the country’s territorial integrity and independence. Each page of our history, whether it is called Posada, Rovine, Podul Inalt, Plevna, Grivita, Marasti, Marasesti, Oituz or Oarba de Mures, bear the imprint of these heroes’ braveness. We will never forget the sacrifice whereby in 1989 we regained our freedom after years of communism. Our heroes are also those who were wounded or who gave their lives in extremely difficult out-of-country missions, in the theaters of operations in Afghanistan, Iraq or the Western Balkans, as well as in the missions carried out in Africa and Asia under the UN, NATO or the EU aegis, in defence of our universal principles and values,” says the head of state.
He also points out that the Romanians will remain forever grateful to those who, in the name of ideals, have made Romania’s development and modernization possible.
“Their example of courage and sense of duty is an invaluable legacy we pass down to the young generations. May the spirit and emotional charge of this day enter the soul of every Romanian!” Iohannis concludes.
