Sibiu International Theatre Festival will be “anthological” * The event of this year has a budget of EUR 9 million

For the first time, from 9th to 19th of June, on the occasion of the largest festival dedicated to performing arts in Romania, namely Sibiu International Theatre Festival (FITS), Sibiu will have guest such as: Tim Robbins, Christoph Marthaler, Ludovic Lagarde — La Comedie de Reims, Antonio Andrade Flamenco, Finzi Pasca, the most important Noh theatre company in the world, Yamamoto Noh Theater, as well as Korsunovas, Thomas Ostermeier, Alvis Hermanis and Luk Perceval.

In total, the 2016 edition will host 452 events, a huge amount which positions Sibiu festival on the first place in the world, according to organizers.

This year, the budget of the festival will amount EUR 9 million, out of which less than a half are money granted by the State, the others being sponsorships, European funds and financing international projects, stated the director of the festival, the actor Constantin Chiriac, in a press conference.

He announced that this year’s edition will be “an anthological one”, having the theme called “Building trust”.

FITS’ 23rd edition will begin on Friday and it will end on June 19.

Sibiu is already proud of a Culture Factory, which is a former industrial plant transformed in the largest hall for events in the city, a center which Constantin Chiriac aims to transform in “one of the most interesting centers of performing arts in Europe”.

“Another novelty for the festival is the Culture Factory, the new creation, where we have developed an Alternative Center for Culture, Education and Research, where we have three playing areas for Faust, Lulu and Metamorphoses and are preparing the fourth area which will actually develop one of the most interesting centers for performing arts in Europe, at this moment”, Constantin Chiriac said.

The president of the festival in Sibiu, Constantin Chiriac, mentioned that this year’s edition of the Sibiu International Theater Festival (FITS) will prove that this cultural event is actually dedicated not only to the theater, but to the “performing arts”.

“It is very important that Sibiu gathers the most famous names of performing arts.  Sibiu International Theater Festival is registered with this name at OSIM and this is the reason we didn’t change its name in an art festival, but it is a festival of performing arts”, stated Constantin Chiriac.

Being a real cultural brand of Sibiu and Romania, FITS took place last year under the high patronage of the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis.
