Final results give SocDems more than half of mayoralties, including Bucharest

Social Democrat Party (PSD) candidates won 1,677 mayoral races in last Sunday’s local elections; the National Liberal Party (PNL) has 1,081 mayors, the Hungarian Democrat Union of Romania (UDMR) 195, the Romanian Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) 64, the National Union for Romania’s Progress (UNPR) 26, the PSD+UNPR alliance 18, and 53 independents were elected, the Central Electoral Bureau announced on Friday, after completing the count in all 3,186 polling stations.

Other parties got fewer mayors: the Hungarian Civic Party 13, the Democrat Forum of Germans of Romania 5, the Romanian Social Party (PSRO) 4, the PSD+ALDE alliance 4, the Christian Democrat National Peasants’ Party 3; and the Social Liberal Humanist Power Party, the United Romanian Party, the MPP-EMNP alliance and the Alliance for the Future 2 each. One mayor was elected from each of other parties.

In local councils, PSD won 16,648 positions; PNL – 13,193; ALDE – 2,504, UDMR – 2,284; the People’s Movement Party – 1,315; UNPR – 1,203; PSRO – 318; independents – 316; the other parties got less than 300 counselors each.

In county councils, PSD has 579 seats; PNL – 496; UDMR – 95, ALDE – 76; PMP – 37; PSD+UNPR – 35; UNPR – 14. Other parties got 10 or less counselors each.

In Bucharest, Social Democrat Senator Gabriela Firea is mayor-elect, with 42.97 per cent of the votes in the city’s 1,252 polling stations. PSD’s alliance with UNPR has 24 municipal counselors; the Save Bucharest Union is next with 15; PNL – 8; and PMP and ALDE 4 each.
