Former PM Victor Ponta stated that he is not interested anymore to be the leader of the Social Democrat Party (PSD) or to be a Prime-Minister, and also that he wouldn’t run again for the presidency, because “normally, anybody will run for the presidency from PSD’s side, will win the first round and lose the second one”, adding that he hopes to be free when he will write his memoirs.
“I wouldn’t run again for the presidency… I don’t know why did I do it (…) Normally, anybody will run for the presidency from PSD’s side, will win the first round and lose the second one. It means either I am crazy, or I began to like it. If it’s in a single round, I will, if it’s in two rounds, I will not”, Ponta stated for Antena 3 in a satiric show.
Asked if he is interested to return in politics at the top of PSD or to be Prime-Minister again, the social-democrat deputy denied having such plans: “No, no (I am not interested of the PSD leadership – e.n.). Honestly, it doesn’t work twice (the Prime-Minister position – e.n.)”.
Also, asked if it’s true that Elena Udrea came to him to negotiate the nominating of the DNA chief-prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi, Ponta partially confirmed, saying that this episode is only a p[art of the story, and he added that he will give details at the right moment. “Is it true that Elena Udrea came to you as the messenger of Traian Basescu? – e.n.) A little bit, not much. It’s a little piece from a bitter story which, at some point, we will tell, because it’s nice”, Ponta stated.
Being asked if he will write his memoirs, the former PM sued in the Turceni-Rovinari case said, while laughing: “I hope I will be free when I’ll do it”.
Victor Ponta restated that he regrets the USL project and Crin Antonescu, saying that both of them are responsible for the Union’s disintegration, because they let themselves to be influenced by the “courtiers”. “It’s like a divorce, we are divorced, but we’re still in love with each other, I’m crying for him and he’s crying for me… I guess I’m crying more”, Ponta said.
“Since Monday, Zgonea is not the leader of the Chamber of Deputies anymore”
Former PM Victor Ponta stated for Romania TV that Valeriu Zgonea has lost the leadership of the Chamber of Deputies. “Since Monday, the position of the President of the Chamber of Deputies is vacant”, said Ponta. The Permanent Bureau of the Chamber of Deputies was going to convene on Monday, and the opinion of the Commission for the Statute was going to be included on the agenda of the meeting, stipulating that the President position of the forum is automatically lost at the moment of losing the political support, as happened to Valeriu Zgonea after he was excluded from PSD.
“Since Monday, Mr. Zgonea no longer leads the Chamber of Deputies. Actually, the third position in the state is vacant since Monday. The new regulation voted by the deputies enters into force on Monday”, Victor Ponta stated for Romania TV.
Deputies have decided to amend the Regulation of the Chamber so that Valeriu Zgonea to lose his position when he remains without the political support of the group which proposed him.
Victor Ponta accused Klaus Iohannis that he tried to “take over” the Chamber of Deputies like he took the house in Sibiu, by using “fake documents”.
The former Prime-Minister underlined that these days it will be decided who will take over the third position in the state.
PSD tries to make the position of the President of the Chamber of Deputies to remain vacant by using two methods: by amending the Regulation of the forum, which stipulates that the group of which the President is a member is the only one who can do this thing, in the circumstances that Zgonea is an independent MP, so he is not a member of any group -, as well as an interpretation of the Statute which stipulates that any position, including the position of the President of the forum (and not only the one of the leader of a specialized committee or the rest of the leading positions in the Permanent Bureau of the Chamber of Deputies) becomes vacant when the political support is retired.
As for the second method used by the Social-Democrats, the Commission for the Statute decided that any position will be automatically lost by losing the political support, which would be the case of the President of the Chamber of Deputies, in the circumstances in which these provisions weren’t applied to the first position of the forum until now. Last week, the Parliament’s leadership discussed this point of view, deciding to send it to the Permanent Bureau of the Chamber of Deputies.
Valeriu Zgonea disputes this interpretation and let us to understand that any attempt to remove him needs to be voted in the plenum of the Chamber of Deputies.
“I hope that legal and constitutional procedures will be followed. Valeriu Zgonea isn’t incompatible, so we don’t have to take note of anything. There is not a Court’s decision in this case. From this point of view, we have to follow the Constitution and the Regulation, anyway. I presume that there are enough clever minds in the Parliament to understand this”, Zgonea stated.
Previously, the head of the Chamber stated that he takes into account to dispute the decision before the administrative Courts, if PSD tries to remove him on the grounds of this interpretation of the Statute.
