James have released their video for the single which entitles their last album, “Girl At The End Of The World” (2016). A cult band of the British stage, admired by an army of fans in the same high extent as The Smiths, to which they were compared many times, the band cooperated with the actor Brandon Flowers and the Romanian actress Alexandra Chelaru. The video is signed by the director Kris Merc (also responsible for the shocking “My Surprise”, included on the same album), telling in obsessive images a powerful story about the seconds in which your entire life and beloved people pass in front of your eyes between the last two heartbeats. James will perform for the first time in Romania on June 11, at Lazy Monday, at the Herastrau Summer Theater, along with Jack Savoretti and Public Service Broadcasting.
Beautiful Alexandra Chelaru discovered the theater at the Popular School of Arts in Brasov. She followed her dream in the childhood and let herself led by it until New York, in USA, where she lives. She is an AADA (The American Academy of Dramatic Arts) graduate, also following the courses of the SITI theater company IN France. She has a background in theater, film, television and modeling: Dîner à Montpellier (2015), Sole Proprietor (2016), Mysteries at the Museum (Discovery Channel), Mysteries at the Castle (2014), etc. She speaks French, English and Russian, she practices yoga, she flirted with fencing and she relaxes herself by riding and… knitting.
Tim Booth, the James soloist, wrote the lyrics for “Girl At The End Of The World” in 2015, about someone who is going to die in a car accident and who, within a second, sees his entire life and the beloved one. “When I read them at the end, I was really scared, because all of my lyrics tend to become reality. Usually, this happens one year later. In April, I was driving on the highway and someone hit me from behind. Our car turned and time had stopped. I was only able to check if my wife and my son are all right. I could see in the rearview mirror that the one who hit us turned 180 degrees and stopped in front of this wall of traffic speedily coming towards him. Fortunately, no one was hurt” (CultureCollide). The album “Girl At The End Of The World” includes 12 songs and it’s a continuation of the themes launched in 2014 on the album “La Petit Mort”, partially inspired by the death of Tim Booth’s mother and of the one of his best friends.
James Band has become an institution on the British alternative music stage in ’80-’90. At the beginning of their career, they were intensively promoted by Morrissey, who took them in the tournament with The Smiths, but they continued to perform in tournaments and to record songs, finally creating their own important group of fans. Cooperation turns into rivalry. Morrissey’s song “We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful” is probably written for James. As a reply, James open their series at the huge Glastonburry festival in 1992, where they replace Morrissey in the last minute, exactly with this song. At the end of the ‘80s, James members let themselves seduced by the “baggy” stage (a kind of danceable rock music which was popular in UK at that time), like many other British artists; thus, they recor their great hit “Sit Down”, dedicated to the artist Patti Smith, one of Booth’s major musical influences. “Sit Down” becomes the single to which they are so much assimilated that there will be concerts in which the band revolts and refuses to sing other songs but the new materials. Later, James sound becomes more experimental, culminating into a cooperation with the legendary Brian Eno (U2, David Bowie, Roxy Music producer), leading to their greatest American album, “Laid” (1993). The band celebrates today 30 years of musical career, 14 studio albums and over 25 million albums sold in the whole world. Hits like Laid, Come Home, She’s A Star or Getting Away With It (All Messed Up) flooded year after year the alternative radio charts in Romania and the speakers of the beach parties in Vama Veche.
