Natural gas imports will remain at their 2016 level in the next 3 years

  • Domestic natural gas production will grow from 8.46 million toe in 2016 to 8.73 million toe in 2019

Romania’s natural gas production will grow by 4.5 percent in the next three years, while imports will remain at their 2016 level, according to the Energy Balance Outlook report published by the National Prognosis Commission on Monday.

Thus, the production of natural gas will grow from 8.46 million tons of oil equivalent (toe) in 2016 to 8.585 million toe in 2018 (+1.5 percent) and 8.73 million toe in 2019 (+1.7 percent).

On the other hand, according to CNP estimates, natural gas imports will not change by 2019, set to stand at 290,000 toe annually. Natural gas imports will represent 2.4 percent of total primary energy imports in 2017 and 2018, and 2.3 percent in 2019.

In 2017, Romania’s energy resources will reach 42.065 million toe, up by 1.2 percent year-on-year, according to the Energy Balance Outlook report published by the National Prognosis Commission (CNP).

Of the total energy resources, 40.665 million toe are primary energy resources, of which 25.945 million toe represent production, 11.87 million toe imports and 2.95 million toe the stock registered at the start of the year. Likewise, 1.4 million toe represent the stock of energy in conversion.

Most of these resources, namely 31.715 million toe, will cover domestic consumption, while 6 million toe will be exported. At the same time, at the end of next year it is expected for there to be a stock of energy of 4.35 million toe, CNP experts estimate.

Of the total domestic consumption, 3 million toe represent consumption within the energy sector, 1.03 million toe represent losses and 25.5 million toe are available for end consumption.

In the next two years, energy resources will grow by 1.3 percent annually, being set to reach 42.605 million toe in 2018 and 43.165 million toe in 2019.

The Energy Balance Outlook published in the spring was forecasting a growth of 1.6 percent to 44.02 million toe in 2017, 1.6 percent to 44.725 million toe in 2018 and 1.7 percent to 45.5 million toe in 2019.
