Mayor Catalin Chereches suspended after he was sworn in

Baia Mare Mayor Catalin Chereches has been suspended shortly after he was sworn in. The mayor is currently under pre-trial arrest in a case in which he is accused of passive bribery. The extraordinary session in which the mayor was sworn in took place on Monday. “This situation prompts the coming into force of the tenure. Basically, Mr. Chereches officially becomes mayor as a result of the elections validated by court. As a result of this fact and taking into account the Maramures Court’s ruling, which upheld the pre-trial arrest measure, the suspension from office order has been issued, to remain in force until the court-ordered measure expires. The order is in force starting today,” Maramures County Prefect Sebastian Luput stated on Monday for News.ro.

The Maramures County Prefect’s statement also points out that Chereches’s prerogatives will be taken over by one of the two Baia Mare Deputy Mayors.

“The Baia Mare City Hall has informed us that the Local Council has been convened for tomorrow (Tuesday – editor’s note), with the person that will have the mayor’s prerogatives set to be elected from among the two deputy mayors,” Luput added.
