Romania’s Border Police celebrates 152nd anniversary

Interior Minister Petre Toba on Sunday has congratulated Romania’s Border Police on their day, saying that their results have shown them to be a professional institution recognised at thus in Romania and elsewhere in Europe, an institution that has the operational capability to carry through missions successfully in line with international standards.

“The Border Police anniversary is a significant moment in the organisational history of one of ten most important branch of the Interior Ministry. The Romanian Border Police, same as the other components of the public peace and security system, has permanently developed in line with the social and security realities of Romania, while successfully coping with internal as well as external organisational challenges,” Toba says in his message.

He added that the Border Police are “a highly competent and active organisation that has efficiently undertaken internal missions to improve Romanian’s security as well as missions conducted by the FRONTEX European Agency in relation to all kinds of external borders of the European Union.”

“The international component of Romania’s Border Police’s business has substantively contributed to building Romania’s profile of a stability and security provider, a trustful partner ready to take part in joint solutions for the management of crises facing the European space. Besides theses missions in partnership with European agencies, the Romanian Border Police are managing more than 2,000 km of European Union’s external borders, which makes your responsibility a huge one that regards the entire European space,” says Toba.

As far as security at Romania’s borders is concerned, Toba says the H1, 2016 workload was a substantive one, given that more than 25 million citizens and over 7 million modes of transportation transited through the borders, which, the minister says “entailed a significant effort as well as many additional resources.”

“Increasing border security measures have proved their efficiency, having provided added safety and security to Romanians and other European Union nationals. Thanks to their results, the Border Police proved to be a professional institution recognised as thus at home and elsewhere in Europe, an institution that has the operational capability to carry through missions successfully in line with international standards. On Border Police Day, I want to congratulate you and wish you many professional and personal achievements. Good luck with your future missions!” says Toba.

On July 24, 1864, ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza signed a decree achieving the unification of all of Romania’s border police officers on both sides of the Milcov River, a moment that became a highlight in the history of organisational identity of Romania’s Border Police.
