Central bank spokesman: Exchange rate evolution consistent with trends in the region

The leu to euro exchange rate announced on Monday by the National Bank of Romania (BNR, the central bank) is consistent with the evolution of other currencies in the region, and its variation is somewhat normal for this period, BNR spokesman Dan Suciu explained the downward trend of Romanian currency which hit on 25 July this year’s historic low at 4.4444 lei for 1 euro.

“BNR has no cap for the exchange rate and its variation is somewhat normal for this period. It’s a quite insignificant variation of 0.02 lei at the most, and is consistent with what happens in the region,” Suciu told Agerpres on Monday.

The national currency dropped 0.38 percent (0.0168 lei) against the European currency from Friday’s exchange rate of 4.4612.

Against the US dollar, Romania’s currency on Monday was in line with Friday’s exchange rate of 4.0459, and it also stood steady against the Swiss franc at 4.1051, similar to Friday’s quote.
