Man shot and killed by police officer in Rasnov

A 64-year-old man died in hospital on the night of Saturday to Sunday, after he was shot by a police officer. The incident took place in Rasnov on Saturday, after one of the men’s neighbours called police and asked for help because the man had entered her courtyard armed with a knife and intent on severing her water pump’s hose. According to the Brasov County Police Inspectorate, the man was known as having mental problems. Special Interventions officers called in as back-up used several cans of mace and tear gas to subdue the man, but he managed to stab one of the officers with a hayfork. The officer was protected by his body armour. Another officer made use of his weapon to defend his colleague. The man was shot in his buttock and the bullet entered his abdomen, hitting his main artery and causing profuse haemorrhage. He was urgently taken to the Brasov County Hospital, in a serious condition, but died later that night. The case is investigated by the Brasov Court’s Prosecutor’s Office.
