“I am glad to have won in Montreal, 40 years after Nadia Comaneci”
Romanian tennis player Simona Halep said she was glad to have won the WTA title in Montreal, on the Sunday that marked 40 years since Nadia Comaneci’s victories in the 1976 Olympics held in Montreal.
”It is pleasant that after 40 years I won here. It is a nice thing for Romanians [to have another Romanian victory in Montreal after 40 years] and I am happy I have been able to do so, ” said Halep, referring to the anniversary of 40 years since gymnast Nadia Comaneci scored a perfect 10 at the Montreal Olympics (7 times), having won three Olympic titles (all round, parallel bars and beam).
”On my first day in Montreal I was at the event that marked this anniversary for her and this motivated me a little bit,” said Simona, according to Agerpres.
Halep, who began the year at no. 2 in the WTA rankings and then dropped to the 7th position in May, returned on Monday to the 3rd place after the victory 7-6 (2) 6-3 versus American Madison Keys final.
At Montreal, Simona won her 3rd title this year, after those in Madrid and Bucharest, having reached 14 tournaments won in her career.
“It was not my best tennis, because I could not play it. She [Keys] hit very strongly. Everyone knows I cannot hit stronger than her, it is impossible for my body and my height. I tried to send the ball as far away from her as I could, to make her run. I think I have managed this and she missed. It was really difficult for me to manage ‘winners’ because the ball came too fast,” Halep told the press conference after the singles’ final, admitting she was tired.
”Plan A was to try to be aggressive, but it was impossible. I knew that I had to send the balls back and hit them lightly, because she could attack them. I tried to be solid on my feet and to open angles. That is what I thought of when I started the game,” said Halep.
”I like it here, in Montreal. I felt like in Europe, I said it before. With all Romanians in the stands, I felt like home. Many came every day, not just for the final. It was a fantastic atmosphere,” mentioned Halep.
“The man that announced me at the ground told me two words in Romanian and that motivated a lot. I told myself that I must win,” said Simona Halep.
